The Billy Trail Completed
2000
The Billy Trail, a walking and cycling path following the route of the former Hayling Island branch line, was completed as a traffic-free recreational route connecting Havant to Langstone and onwards to Hayling Island. The trail takes its name from the 'Hayling Billy', the affectionate nickname given to the small tank engines that once worked the branch line. The trail runs from Havant station southward through Langstone, crossing the harbour on a modern bridge that replaced the original railway structure. The Billy Trail is one of the most popular recreational routes in the Havant area, used by walkers, cyclists and families. The flat, traffic-free surface makes it accessible to pushchairs, wheelchairs and young cyclists. The harbour views along the trail are outstanding.
