Staunton Country Park is the largest and most varied green space in the Havant borough, covering approximately 1,000 acres on the northern edge of the built-up area. The park occupies the former grounds and farmland of the Leigh Park estate, and its combination of woodland, ornamental gardens, farmland, open parkland and an ornamental lake makes it one of the finest country parks in Hampshire.
The park is managed by Hampshire County Council and is free to enter, though there is a charge for car parking. The park is accessible on foot from Leigh Park and by car from the surrounding area. The main entrance and visitor facilities are on Middle Park Way.
The walled garden is one of the highlights, restored and planted with a mix of ornamental and productive plants. The garden provides a sheltered, attractive space that is particularly pleasant in spring and summer. The ornamental lake, set in parkland with mature trees, provides a focal point for walking and wildlife watching. Ducks, geese, herons and other waterbirds are regularly seen on and around the lake.
The woodland areas of the park offer shade and a sense of seclusion, with marked trails winding through the trees. The woodland is managed for conservation and recreation, with areas of ancient woodland, planted stands and more open glades. In spring, bluebells carpet the woodland floor, and in autumn the leaf colours are outstanding.
The farm at Staunton provides a hands-on experience for families and children, with a range of farm animals including cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and ponies. The farm is particularly popular with young children, and school groups visit throughout the term.
Play areas within the park include both traditional playground equipment and a natural play area, providing outdoor play in a setting that encourages exploration and physical activity. The park also has a cafe and a gift shop.
Walking is the main recreational activity in the park, with trails of varying length and difficulty. The park connects to the wider footpath network, including routes northward towards the South Downs. Dog walkers are well catered for, with dogs welcome in most areas of the park on a lead.
