Bedhampton

Historic village absorbed into Havant, with ancient springs, a medieval church, and a mix of old village core and twentieth-century estates.

Bedhampton lies to the west of Havant town centre and is one of the older settlements in the area, with a recorded history stretching back well before the Domesday Book. The village core around Bedhampton Road and the old church of St Thomas retains a quiet, semi-rural character, though much of the wider Bedhampton area was developed with housing estates in the twentieth century. The springs at Bedhampton, fed by underground chalk aquifers, have been an important water source since Roman times and continue to supply water to the area. Bedhampton Hill provides elevated ground with views towards Langstone Harbour and Portsdown Hill. The A27 runs through the area, separating the older village from the newer residential streets to the south. Bedhampton has its own primary school, a local parade of shops, and a community identity that is distinct from Havant proper. The mix of historic village core and mid-century suburban expansion gives Bedhampton two characters: the quiet lanes around the old church and the busier residential streets of the estates.
